Born in the forcibly segregated South African urban townships during apartheid, Township Jazz blends traditional African music, Marabi and Kwela with 20th century American jazz. On the 90th anniversary of one of its pioneers, Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly Dollar Brand), NYJO pays tribute to this incredible music of celebration and protest, led by Ibrahim’s long-term disciple Pete Letanka.
